About Pilates®
The principles of Joseph H. Pilates, developed in the early and
mid 1900’s, is the basis for the body of work now known as
Pilates. This unique form of mind-body conditioning uses focused
attention to the manner in which movements are executed. It
is a sophisticated exercise system that retrains the body’s
posture, alignment, and biomechanics. The result is greater awareness
of one’s body; improved tone, strength, flexibility and range
of motion; greater ease of movement through one’s daily activities,
enhanced sports performance.
A specially trained instructor guides the client through the work
either in small groups on the equipment, on floor mats for Mat Classes,
or in a private one-to-one session. Specialized equipment,
using springs for resistance, provide great flexibility and variety
for customized programs that train the body in multiple planes of
movement. The emphasis on core conditioning and proper biomechanics
is particularly beneficial for conditioning weak backs and problem
joints.
The benefits are enjoyed by everyone from pregnant women to seniors,
sedentary individuals to elite athletes, to clients with post-injury
rehabilitation issues.
More than just the time spent exercising in the studio, the goal
is to help clients maximize results by retraining the way the body
holds itself whether walking, standing, sitting or engaging in life’s
activities. One finishes feeling energized yet calm, stronger, taller,
and more centered.
